im planning on buying a double bass kit sometime this year, and i was wondering how i should set up my hihat. i love the stand i have, and i already have a dropclutch. but should i get a remote stand, one of those gibby ones that moves to the side, or set it up beside the second kick? what do you guys suggest as the best feeling/ reachable/ cheap way to go... i dont want to buy another hihat or stand rly, and i dont have the $$$ for a rack, soooo

bass drum clamp to your current stand like Chopper does.

CHOPPER! where are those pics you said you'd find later? they can help him too. Thumbs Up

get a right angle type clamp, actually two of them.    take the top or middle portion of a boom stand,  clamp the hi hat (w/ legs folded up)    to a nearby cymbal stand.

this is how Jeff  ( granstar 26  does his)
mine is the same idea,  just attached to a rack.
i also have a 35 dollar  pearl  hiihat bass drum attahcment unit)     it works fine,  but i prefer the rack mount.

i have a dw 5000 remote hat,  and i used the clamps it came with for my main hi hat,  and mount the remote hat directly to my rack with a gibby rack clamp.   i was able to do what you're talking about doing using what i had laying around.

that pic doesn't show you what you wanted to see i don't think,  but it gives a good idea of the placement of the pedal.   it;s rock solid,   the hihat stand won't move anywhere

NO,  this is direct to the rack,  but you could do the same thing and attach to a stand if you have no rack.   same concept,  just slightly different application.

the hihat bass  clamp things  actually clamps to your bass drum hoop,  and holds the hihat right by your left bass drum pedal.   it;s a good way to go,  but my method offers more flexibility in positioning.  Plus, i don't like clamping shit to my nice bass hoops.

couldn't find pic online of the pearl stuff i have,  But.  my bass/hihat comes with this exact clamp here,  plus a part that attaches to the hoop-  so you can use this clamp pictured to attach to the hihat stand itself,  and the thing on your bass hoop.

well im fine with it being right beside my bass pedal.....  i dont have the money for a rack or a lot of hardware in general. i dont have much as it is. if i put som e kind of foam padding, then it shouldnt rash on the bass hoop, but my hihat stand is about an inch or so thick. thats my only concern.

LOL...Sorry. I really gotta take a couple of better pics, but here are a few for you. First two are the GranstarCustum kit with the bass hoop clamp. The third is the bar I use on the AII kit clamped to a cymbal stand in the bass drum. The fourth is just a better pic of the rod I use to connect it when I had the Gibby rack.

thanks chopper, that shows me what ima get with my kit.... most of the pics i saw of the bass clamps looked cheap or not sturdy, but that looked pretty tough. guess i will check out those pearl clamps... BTW, those Tama pedals (not the IC's) look really slippery, lol..... are they actually good?

I've got the Tama clamp on the GC kit.  Its sturdy and works great...

I bought those pedals back in 1993 just before the original Iron Cobras were released. That is a Probeat double pedal. The same model used by Dave Lombardo. Yes, they are good pedals...17 years old and still work great!

mine doesn't.   any decent one should not damage a hoop,  although i suspect a slight mark may be visible after using it that way.   that's why i go to a rack or a stand.   added precaution,  and a generally  better setup.

thanks for the history lesson lol! thanks for the help tho... I find that no one is ever on Drummer Connection and they have now gone under because they lack funds... seems as though facebook is the only way they roll now. They had some nice pics from NAMM. But anyways, you guys are much more helpful!
