22" rockstar in front, 24 artstar at left, 26 inch granny at right. 4 extra inches makes a huge difference. the 26 even makes the 24 look tiny, lol.
  I brought my artstar to my house in quebed, as I have a band opportunity around here, and set up the grannys again at my other house. and I gotta say, i miss those fucking 26's!!  |

If I had enough money, I would like to have different sized bass drums to get different sounds. I think someone on Ebay sold a DW kit that used the idea; it had at least one 20", 22", and 24" (don't remember if there was a 26").

I love the bass drums G,,,most guys like snares but I love bass drums the best. I might have mentioned this before and if so I appologize but during my formative years I only played a 28" bass,,,,still got it. The thing is with 26" and 28" bass drums you don't need the beater to hit the middle. Not like a 24 and below. Then on the other hand some guys never want the beater in the middle, but I think thats a minority bunch. With 18" 20" 22" 24" drums I want the beater in the center.

24 is the smallest I go for kicks. No more 22's (to play seriously).
It is just wild, to think that 4" difference makes THAT much difference. But it does!!! Major league!

I sold my kit with a 22 inch bass drum, now I only have my 20 inch. Bass drum that is. I don't need huge bass drums to compensate for anything. :P
Seriously though, I think a 22 inch bass drum will fill my needs better than a 20 inch one, but I'm stuck with this one for a while. |

Since lots of players use so much muffling, blankets, etc, bass drums of all dimensions will sound like a plastic impact lol.

The reason I'm not a huge fan of larger kicks is that you lose their sound very easily. They have a nice tone, good rumble, etc. However live, you still just hear mostly attack (like most other bass drums), and sometimes even less so, since the sound is spread a bit more.
Recording a bass drum that large would need some serious work to do it justice. I remember when Jeff had some recordings done, and the kicks sounded lame. You'd need one of those Sub-bass Yamaha things to get it going well enough, which is great, but most studios wouldn't bother. I have no real central point here other than I wouldn't like to play on bass drums that large. Then again I'm not the one owning them, so my point is pointless.

This is probably why. 22 -> 26 is only 18% diameter increase, but 40% area increase. 530 sq in vs 380. |

we´ve just talked here about diameter, but what about the depth? It´s not the same a 16x22 than a 18x22 and so on... My favourite sizes are 18x22 and 18x24. I like the extra low end that is added on deeper bass drums.

24 is the biggest i would definitely go. it would make toms too high. my 14x11 is a tad bit high for how i like it as is with a 22. i think i can only do a 1 up 2 down with a 24
