Have a question, query, critique, or comment for the show?  Want to ask one or all of the hosts for advice of any kind?  Post your shit here!

We'll fork through them, and answer them on the show! The questions can be about anything, as can be the comments. Any non-show posts will most likely be deleted.Tongue

You can also PM your questions to either Granstar, Punch, Wormser, or myself if you want to be kept anonymous - just make sure you note that you don't want your name to be mentioned.

i was searching for a drum posdcast and came across this forum. i love the show, and i had a question about some drum stuff,

i have an old ass pearl export

i was wondering if its possible to put the toms on tube mounts from another company. because the originals are falling apart, and the pearl ones are more expensive.

Thanks

Here's a question: What are your opinions of the prominent extreme metal drummers of today, like flo, roddy, kollias, Romain goulon, Tim yeung, Marco Pitruzella... To name a few....
Oh and i would love to hear this, seeing as normally its one of those love em or hate em things: Opinions about triggers...

Does it really matter what drums (wood, manufacturer...) you play?  Seriously?  In a blind audio test I guarantee 99.9999999999999999999999% of drummers couldn't tell you exactly which drum was being played if they didn't know what it was prior to hearing it played.  A good amount of companies use the same shells anyways.  Outside of drum size and heads/tuning, can you honestly tell the difference?

yes,  absolutely.   birch and maple,  easy to hear the difference.  a set with or with out sound focus rings is noticable too.    a yamaha maple absolute and a starclassic maple, same sizes, same heads, same person tuned them...well, the blind ear test might be tougher to tell apart.  if that is the case,  your probably right the 90+ percent couldn't tell.

While at a music shop recently a young saleskid "enlightened" me that to be professional quality a drum has to be made out of maple.  Without saying it out loud, I immediately dismissed him as an idiot.

But it raises a good question.  I see a lot of manufacturers selling mid-priced kits that are better quality than anything pro-quality made 30 years ago, but they only call their most expensive kits 'professional'.  My question to the UBD Podcrew is:

What makes a professional kit professional?  Is the word professional just a sales con?

Do you have to buy the most expensive drums to be a pro?

I think I know the answer, but discuss this for the millions of confused kids out there who have listened to stupid salesmen. Smile

These are definitely great questions, or at least great launchpads for discussions/debates.  Hopefully we will touch on some of this stuff.  Much of it is subjective, but there are distinct things that make a kit high-end.  Then, of course, there is the difference between a high-end kit and a kit that sounds good to you - and which has more credence.

ooooh, I got another one: We have all sorts of drum shell materials (wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, acrylic, aluminum) but cymbals are pretty much limited to some sort of bronze alloy.  Do you think they should experiment with different metals and alloys (like aluminum or others)?

Do you think most drummers are too focused on gear and not on the actual playing of the drums?

That's a fair question...but we've spoken a lot about that already.  I actually like your previous question...suggesting it to the board now.
I'm not insane. I'm just smarter than you.
