    Posted: 20 July 2010 at 10:10pm

When im playing, the right beater on my double pedal consistantly flies out every 8 minutes... It is REALLY annoying, and I was wondering what I could do about it. I have two ideas in mind: put plumbing tape on the set screw threads so they dont come out unless i wrench with the key. OR I heard you could like dremel or drill a little dip into the beater rod so the one set screw goes in a lil bit deeper. the problem i have with the second idea is that it kills resale value and if i want a different length then its not really changable. Any help is apreciated, thanks for everything!

If the set screw is the problem, as in it's backing out or loosening, then try some medium-strength thread locker. I use blue Locktite on a lot of screws, and it holds very well. It takes a bit of force to break the locker, but nothing extreme. Once you break the lock, the Locktite sort of just flakes away.

So if it's the set screw that's slipping, then thread locker is the cheapest, least invasive solution.

I agree, that would be a great solution, with no damage to any part of your pedal, Thumbs Up

Yea, i know what locktite is (I play paintball, it and pluming tape are necessary)... It does the same thing as plumbing tape so thats why i thought of that... I think I only have red at this time, which is too strong... so do you think plumbing tape will do the job even if it looks ghetto?

You can try some clear nail polish on the threads.  It will prevent the screw from backing out, and would be easy to break the bond if needed.  Are you sure that you are tightening the set screw enough in the first place?

Between loc-tite, plumber's tape and nail polish... which are all basically doing the same thing... I'd say to just go with plumber's tape.  Less mess, no possible corrosion, it comes out of the threads easily and completely.  Any liquids, especially loc-tite, will always stay in there.  If you re-sell it and someone like me is looking at it, he's going to ask why there's loc-tite in there.

Another option is getting a new set screw.  There are error tolerances above and below what the screw and hole are supposed to be.  If you get extremes in both directions it could cause binding, or looseness.  It also could have been caused from you overtightening the screw, and now the threads are worn out.  Might be worth ordering a new part and being careful about how tight you crank the thing.

I've never had trouble with removing blue thread locker from anything. I've had it on air fittings, and the hardware on my kit. Once the lock is broken, it flakes off, and whatever is left on it can be easily brushed or cleaned off. Red is practically permanent, so that's out of the question. It'll almost never get cleaned off. I stick to my recommendation of medium strength Locktite, since teflon tape isn't as robust a grip at looser levels of screw-tightness. <That's a technical term, by the way. Ouch
