I've never used either Vintage Ambassador or Emperor heads before, other than hearing a vintage ambassador used on a steel snare. I'm satisfied with the sound that the snare yielded, and it will go great on my Supraphonic; but I'm worried about the toms. Ultimately, I'm trying to get something a little warmer than regular coated emperors, but also with a little more melodic/clear tone. Basically a good Jazz sound, but still with the verstality to go other places.
If this isn't the sound that I'm going to get; my next choice would be Coated Ambassadors over clear or coated ambassadors. I'm really in need of new heads (and I'm tired of people beating the shit out of my drums), so from now on my toms are going to be substituted with a set of Imperialstar toms with pinstripes when I/Another experienced drummer isn't playing. Sounds like a dick move, but tuning is such a delicate process to me. Not to mention I try to make tom heads last a long time.
